Robert Lannes: Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture Post #2

Another thing that we have discusses in class, and also that I have read in Victor and Edith Turner's, "Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture," is the bone of communitas.  When one embarks on a pilgrimage with a group of people, a special bond is formed.  This group is isolated from the outide world that we all come from, and are all equal.  There is no status, and they abandon the social 'norms' that surround their normal lives.  Not only does traveling in a group make the pilgrimage a safer experience, but it also form some of the tightest friendships possible.  These people are able to open up to each other, and further enhance their journey.
One of my childhood favorite movies is Stand by Me.  This movie is about these young boys that hear about a boy that was hit by a train, and is dead somewhere off of the train tracks.  The bully older kids in the town decide to head out in their car to go find it and look like heroes, and so do these young boys, by foot.  They go on this journey together, and looking back on it now, displayed elements of communitas.  They bonded, and found themselves on this journey.
