In
Image and Pilgrimage in the Christian Culture written by Arnold Van
Gennep, he discusses how the process of a pilgrimage is a liminoid
phenomenon. He discusses how a
pilgrimage is a period where an individual escapes from the mundane tasks of
everyday life in their day-to-day world and travels through a sort of plane to
reach a spiritual world. Whether
the pilgrim seeks to reach this spiritual world consciously when they set out
on this journey or whether it is simply a minor thought somewhere in their
subconscious, every pilgrim will at point along the journey and in some degree
experience this liminality.
