Miscellaneous Post #2 Matt Marquand
In a recent article on CNN.com I discovered Connecticut recently abolished the death penalty making it the 17th state to abandon capital punishment. The law is effective immediately and life in prison without the possibility of release is the state's highest form of punishment. Connecticut has exercised the death penalty since it was a colony but a Supreme Court decision in 1976 increased its application and it was banned April 25th. The state currently has eleven prisoners on death row and supporters of the appeal claim inmates who are sentenced to the death often file multiple appeals costing the state more than a life sentence. The taxpayers pay for this expense and advocates say this is unfair and the abolishment of the death penalty will be more cost effective. The death penalty has been a controversial topic for more than 50 years and I predict more and more states will abandon it.
