Emma Byers: Outside reading 2

After hearing stories and seeing movies of spiritual journeys in our ULLC class I was trying to figure out how I could reach and have these encounters myself. It wasn’t until after I read Liz Cathey’s final essay for class that I realized that nature was the true connection to all of these experiences. She wrote of an Island off of the coast of Michigan in which she found a secret door that lead to an open balcony on the rooftop of the house they stayed in over the summer and how seeing the landscape and the ocean around her and being secluded from all modern life made her feel at peace with life. The experience that God was sitting right beside her was just so powerful it made me reflect on my own life experiences. It was then that I realized that the closest I had ever gotten to a spiritual encounter was while I was in nature, a place separated from the rest of the world but without reaching a liminal stage.
