I just finished the book Cujo. I had heard all about it from
my Mom, saying it changed her outlook on dogs and household pets in general,
but I know that she scares easily. It didn’t scare me, not really. I read a lot
of horror stories, so they don’t faze me. This one did strike me however, as
while there weren’t any otherworldly forces behind the happenings in the plot,
they were alluded to. The main character caught in the conflict saw Cujo as a
force of nature or God himself, come to punish her for being an unfaithful
wife. What she saw in that rapid dog was exactly the opposite of something
sacred, and yet I couldn’t help but link the two. Because of her mindset and
worries, she turned that dog into a demon out to get her and only her, where
really it was just a sick and aggressive pet. A normal person does this when
they come upon a sacred place, using their perception to become aware of a
sacred place that they might not have suspected previously.
