Liz Cathey: Class Reading 5

Prior to this class, I had heard about the mask of the Holy, but had no grasp on the concept at all.  In Belden Lane's book, Landscapes of the Sacred, the topic is discussed in detail.  As I understand it, the concept refers to aspects of nature wearing a figurative "mask" which can block the original feeling of being sacred and holy that it gave an individual on their first visit there.  Lane gives several examples of this.  Lane goes on to argue that that memory that you have of your sacred place is often better than physically going back there.  To me, this means that the memory and good feelings that you have towards a place are often the most strong and powerful thing that a person can hold onto.
