Rebecca Johnson: The Importance of Place

In the book, Landscapes of the Sacred, one of the very first topics that Belden C. Lane touches on is the importance of place and how it shapes meaning in a person's life. He states that, "personal identity is fixed for use by the feel of our own bodies, the naming of the places we occupy, and the environmental objects that beset our landscape...we feel out of touch without a place" (p.7). I completely agree with Lane, people need to feel as if they belong somewhere. It is that sense of belonging that keeps us going. For my research paper, I am exploring the importance of place in terms of shaping religion. The place itself and the society that surrounds it are very influential when it comes to a person's religious views. We might not think too much about it, but where a person is from has a great deal to do with what he or she believes in.
