In Belden Lane's Landscapes of the Sacred, he discusses of four axioms that are able to guide the student of American spirituality in seeking to understand the character of sacred space, and which help describe how places are perceived in the process of mythogenesis. The final axiom conveys that the impulse of sacred place is both centripetal and centrifugal, local and universal. This means the experience and/or encounter of the divine or extraordinary power is not only taken in at that particular location but continues to be inherent with a person anywhere he or she goes. I can see how this can be true and I agree with what Lane is trying to say.
An example of this axiom can be seen in those who embark on spiritual journeys or pilgrimages. They experience a special transformation along the journey and gain insight at some point. This knowledge and revelation they receive is not only happening at that point but it will be with the person everywhere he or she goes from that point on.
