Lane's Four Axioms
Tucker Frye
Lane talks about four axioms that express what a sacred place is. The first axiom states that a sacred place chooses, and is not chosen. A person does not simply proclaim a spot sacred, rather the area must do something that gets that reaction. The second axiom states that a sacred place is an ordinary place, made extraordinary. An area that become sacred is an ordinary place. That can mean that it is a garden or maybe a big rock. It can be anything. What makes a sacred place sacred comes from a relationship with people. The third axiom states that a sacred place can be tread upon without being entered. Just because one person had an encounter at a sacred place does not mean everyone will. The fourth axiom states that the impulse of a sacred place is both centripetal and centrifugal. An example of the fourth axiom comes in my relationship with God. The centripetal part causes me to be drawn to Him and want to know more about Him. The centrifugal part causes me to tell others about my relationship with God.
