Lane claims that “in the journey beyond the age of modernity
human beings increasingly express a vague longing for God’s presence in the
world. Their quest is for an authentic sense of place and the experience of
dwelling meaningfully in a fragmented universe (226).” Human beings desire to be in communion with God. At root is
a spiritual longing, hunger for Our Creator. Fulfillment of this deep longing
and hunger can only be pacified through intimate communion with his creation.
One example of intimacy that pacifies the longing for our creator is companionship.
A relationship between a man and a woman, for example, mimics the intimacy
between God and man. Similarly a man’s interaction with the wilderness can
pacify the hunger for God. Belden C. Lane claim’s that “though not seen face to
face, God is yet encountered with striking immediacy in the larvae Dei- the created marvels of God’s
hand…” (67). So it is no surprise
that many believe that by being in contact with the God’s creation, the
wilderness, one can achieve intimacy with God.
