Lane claim’s that our ‘Landscapes
are culture before they are nature’ (239). In class we defined culture as
people interacting with each other in response to something in their
environment. We talked about how stories of nature effect how we perceive nature.
Just few years a go our consumerism culture defined nature. So many say the
landscape as a place to exploit for resources. However, I believe in today’s
culture nature is perceived as a sacred space more than it had been before. The
emphasis on consequences of global warming, and the culture of going green has
begun to define our culture and have begun to define how we perceive nature.
The move to protect landscapes from human corruption has increased as a
result. As the ideology of our
culture has altered to conservatism our perception of nature has altered as
well.
