Lane claim’s that “in the journey
beyond the age of modernity, human beings increasingly express a vague longing
for God’s presence in the world”. In the craziness of today we hardly find time
to rest. We often feel so rushed that we cannot even imagine an escape from our
load of responsibilities. Pressing office deadlines, clamor of traffic jams,
and the constant demands of life leaves us exhausted. The hectic life
disorients us and makes us wonder what is the point of life. Is it enough to believe in a higher
authority when life has become a string of deadlines? Assume one does believe
that there is a higher power out there is deeply involved in daily affairs of
life. Then is it enough to go to church every week and carry out the same mundane
ritualistic acts? Or is it enough to take a vacation? It can be argued that
vacations can help break the hectic cycle of daily life. However even our
vacations have become jammed packed with activities, so they feel more like an
assignment then a break. In some ways the modern life style propels us towards
a longing for something more. There has to be more to life than just long
strings of deadlines? Relationships momentarily pacify this longing and hunger
for more, however even they are fleeting shadows of true contentment. So our
heart desires for a more intimate companionship. It is probably too much to ask
for this form of companionship from mere humans for they will constantly fail
at providing for the full extent of our needs, and let us down. However, if
this form of companionship is sought from the all-powerful Divine then there is
possibility that all that we want in a relationship is given to us. Belief in
the Divine promises fulfillment of deepest longings and desires.
