Lane's first axiom states that sacred land isn't chosen, it chooses. What Lane's first axiom means is that one cannot simply declare that a tree is sacred; there must be a spiritual encounter, a happening residing within that area. If enlightenment came whenever we so chose, there would be no sanctity because it would be everywhere.
Sacred place isn't chosen, it chooses. Be it brief or everlasting, the enlightenment that comes from a place is there because the cosmos saw it just to use that particular place as a portal. Should one person watch the sunset on the beach and suddenly feel at peace or enlightened, that place will become sacred to them because the place chose to give them peace of mind.
