The 3 phases of a rite of passage, Evan Moog
In Turner's book, he talks about the three phases of a rite of passage. The first is separation from the society and culture that one is submerged into already. The next phase is the liminoid, or marginal, phase that happens when one lives in between social structure. And the last is aggregation, which is coming back into structure of the sacred place or religious structure when one achieves the rite of passage. The three phases are focused on the liminal process in the middle that is a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a liminal process because the person is separated from the society and lives by a different set of codes or rules in order to reach the final destination.
