Hunter Bronder: green manure

Green manure is when people, typically farmers grow crops and let them die to allow their nutrients to be reabsorbed by the soil as organic matter. This is done instead of adding nasty chemicals to the soil or plants to help crops grow. This seemed to follow the ideas of the class, as nature is natural and shouldn’t be affected with science. Just as trail magic is seen as bad by many hikers, some farmers see these chemicals as bad. Although they help the plant grow bigger and stronger, we are taking away from them in their natural form. Humans are apposed to taking steroids and this is the same thing but plants are doing it. I believe that although the cost may be slightly more, we need to let out plants grow naturally and not add any chemicals. The idea of green manure is good though because it isn’t adding anything unnatural, its just using plants to help plants.
