Jackie Bond- Lane's 3 Approaches

After reading Lane's book, I have learned about this three approaches for understanding sacredness. The first is called ontological. This is where one looks at time and place throughout the history of a culture. This could be stories that are handed down through generations, or other ways that the message is carried down through the years. This rich history increases its power and the influence it can have over people.
The second approach is called the cultural approach. This claims that a sacred landscape is somewhere that "people are willing to fight and even die" for. For example, Mecca is a very sacred place to Muslims. They would fight to the death to protect this place.
Finally, the third approach is the phenomenological approach. This says that the topography and geography of a place is what makes a place sacred. This approach emphasizes how the place is sacred on its own, even without the effects of humans.
