Keely Johnson: Landscapes of the Sacred #4
Lane's use of a spider as a symbol for sacred place seemed a little bit fruity. The web a spider spins is not ambiguous to understand as Lane so states. A spider uses its web for catching prey and as a place to lay its eggs. Although a spider web can be admired from a far, unless you are a small fly, insect, or bird, you really wouldn't fear a spider web. The only symbol i can make from the spider only deals with the web, unless you want to compare God to a spider feeding on the trapped prey. The web however, represents an invisible inter-connectedness between you, other people, and the environment. The place supports you and your relationship with others. You rely on this place to build the relationships necessary to make this global web. Yes the spider is the creator, but it is also the angel of death just waiting to devour the poor unfortunate prisoners of the web.
