As a form of ritual, a rite of passage is taken to prove that
said individual is ready to be an adult in that society. Although it’s easy to
think that our American culture has no universal rite of passage, the three
phases of separation, margin or limen, and reaggregation. Separation in
American society can be found in the adolescent leaving home for college or the
adolescent leaving home for a trade skill. After they are removed they are
changed and discover their true identity now that their parents no longer have
control of them. When they are done with discovering their true identity, they
would have worked hard enough to acquire a degree. This degree allows them to
go on and find a means to provide for themselves, no longer needing the support
of their parents and completing their rite of passage in American society in
becoming an adult.
