Emily Jackson Dunlop- Outside reading: Shirley Maclaine
Shirley MacLaine's novel The Camino: a Journey of the Spirit is inspiring and insightful. In this book she describes her personal journey along the Santiago de Compostela Camino in Spain. She states that this journey has been undertaken for centuries with the intent to "find one's deepest spiritual meaning, and resolutions regarding conflicts in Self." Shirley did this pilgrimage to do just that. She explains that it was a long and difficult journey but ultimately very rewarding. In spite of her older age, she persevered and completed her trek. Reading her book really makes me want to at least go out and spend a day in nature, particularly a secluded place away from society to take in the scenery and to fully appreciate what is around me. It also inspires me to take a day hike or maybe a week just to experience what it would be like to live in such a setting.
