In the part of Lane’s book discussing phenomenology, it
describes six different steps that a person falls into when perceiving a sacred
place. At first it is the ambient array that is more like what surrounds the
place itself. After that we take more notice of concrete characteristics of the
place, such as the most noticeable traits like color and landmarks. Next comes
the landscape and very ground the place is anchored to. Then we take notice of
the background and atmosphere of the place, which ties it all together. I agree
with the landmarks and traits related to that making the biggest first
impression, but I think that noticing the atmosphere comes much earlier in the
steps that lanes thinks it does. Personally I notice the atmosphere of a place
first and foremost, and then this influences which parts of the landscape I
take the most notice of.
