Three Approaches
Tucker Frye
There are three approaches to understanding what a sacred place is according to Lane. The first is the ontological approach. In this approach, a sacred place happens of it's own accord. It is a place where the divine or sublime has moved the profane and replaced it with the sacred. It creates it's sanctity from within. The second approach is the cultural approach. In the cultural approach, we see how the people or culture has affected the place to make it sacred. Groups of people will fight and die over a sacred place, and this type of devotion turns the place into a sacred place. The phenomenological approach is the final approach. It explains how the land or topography of a place affects the people. The place recognizes it's own topography and uses it to draw followers.
