There was a lot of reading that I did for my research paper,
but one of the articles that most caught my attention was about a new Act that
had just been passed in the House of Representatives. It moves for a change in
the Wilderness Act, where hunters would be able to use different kinds of
ammunition and all around loosen the restrictions on what would be allowed into
the wilderness areas. The most worrisome of these, and the one that I most
noticed, was the proposed allowance of toxic lead ammunition. Due to how cheap
they are, hunters want to be able to use these when in the wilderness areas.
But using them would pose a great danger not only to the targets of the hunter,
but also any other animal that preys on it. Say they shoot squirrel. They
squirrel dies, the hunter leaves it there, and a bird of prey comes to eat it.
Due to the toxic lead in the squirrel’s system, the bird would then be poisoned
and very likely die. It just worries me that this Act has made it so far
through the legislative system so far and is expected to receive a warm welcome
in the Senate as well.
