Through the entire book of The Stand, the characters faced several new
problems that they had never encountered before. Thanks to the deadly disease
that swept across the U.S., and possibly the entire world by the end of the
book, the characters were thrown into situations where they could no longer
rely on everyday concepts or rules. The communities that they had belonged to
and been a part of were completely destroyed or had simply lost meaning as
there were no longer any people to uphold them. Those that had nothing or were
suffering were now important, as they were one of the few that had somehow been
immune. The stopped being part of a community, with rules and restrictions, to
be a part of a communitas, in a way. As the story went on, the survivors were
split into two factions of basically good and evil. They survived for the sole
purpose of deciding which force would gain domain over their world. With this
war taking place, and the enlightenment of their place within it, they became
more important than they ever were.
