Rebecca Johnson: Communitas

In Turner's book, Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, we learned about communitas. Communitas refers to an unstructured community in which people are equal, without status based on wealth or title. It is a form of solid togetherness and this feeling usually happens on a hike. People meet on the trail from all over the world and there is a feeling of helpfulness and family that everyone shares. I've briefly run into this feeling when I "hiked" skyline drive. It was only for a day, but we stopped at numerous points in the trail and other people around the mountains would relax with us for a time and it was just a very relaxing feeling. It's nice when there is a feeling of equality among everyone.
