Keely Johnson: The Noland Trail

Most of my Tuesday afternoons include an excursion to the Noland Trail. This is the only workout during the week that I put my music aside and soak up the sounds of nature. There is something so serene about taking a light jog around the lake and seeing all of the animals scurrying around and making chatter. The forest moves at a pace unknown to man; slowly, steadily, and unyielding. The trail winds around to fit the natural curves of the shoreline and the trees often block you from view of your surroundings. Everyone you pass by is friendly and polite. The goal of the day is to move at nature's pace and enjoy the sun.

The Noland Trail gives me the escape from the mundane I need at least once a week. It is such a nice contrast to the loud and smelly cars, the loud and smelly people, and all the work piled upon me by teachers. Although my biology classes often go out into the wild for labs, having to collect data ruins the experience. My time on the Noland is to do whatever I deem necessary. I can jog on through without stopping, stand out on the overlooks and enjoy the turtles sunbathing, or just sit and take in the fast moving James River from Lions Bridge. The pace of nature calms me down and gives me focus unlike anything else.
