Rebecca Johnson: Pilgrimage as a Liminoid Phenomenon

In Turner's book, Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, we read about liminoid phenomenon in a pilgrimage and he listed some of the liminal phase attributes found in passage rites:
release from mundane structure; homogenization of status; simplicity of dress and behavior; communitas, both on the journey, and as a characteristic of the goal. which is itself a source of communitas, healing, and renewal; etc.
It is strongly related to communitas. Pilgrimages are usually considered quasi-liminal though because they are not entirely liminal in structure. I'm not sure I have completely grasped an understanding on the term liminality. I wouldn't know how to use it outside of this class but hopefully I can continue to grow and learn more about these things.
