Rebecca Johnson: The Garden of Eden

Since this is a class open to discussing religious topics I just wanted to take this time to jot down some things about the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden, but not the one that everyone is familiar with, the one about Adam and Lilith. Not a lot of people know this, but Adam had a wife before Eve and her name was Lilith. She refused to lie beneath Adam, claiming she was his equal, and because of that she was banished for the Garden of Eden. God made Adam a second wife, Eve, out of Adam's rib so that she was made from man and therefore was not his equal per say. I have always been somewhat confused by this story because Lilith has been made out to seem like some evil demon who feeds on babies and is out to destroy men all because she wanted to be seen as an equal to Adam. This actually kind of upsets me because I don't see how that was so evil? Why was she wrong in saying that to Adam? There have been some theories that claim that the story of Lilith was made up in order to keep women "in their place and not equal to men." I don't know, this story has always bothered me, because I disagree with her being an evil demon, why couldn't she just be independent? ...Obviously I don't know all the accounts of the story, maybe she actually did do something really awful and should be considered as evil but from what I've heard, I just don't see it.
