Rebecca Johnson: Religion and War

Has anyone noticed how many wars have been started because of religion? It's a ridiculous amount of fighting over the simple fact that there is a group of people who believe in something different. I've also noticed a sort of dislike toward the people of Muslim faith since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, because the terrorists were Muslim. They shouldn't represent the entire Muslim population though, they were the radicals in the group. I also think people have forgotten that Christians were once terrorists: The Crusades? That was a form of terrorism, so Muslims are not the only ones. Also, there are plenty of sects of Christianity today that do small acts of terrorism: that Church that goes around and protests funerals, telling the families of the dead that their loved ones were killed because God hated what they had done...who are they to torture those families like that? People today have a tendency to not only believe in God, but act as if they are a messenger of God. Personally I don't see how someone can possibly say that they know exactly what actions God does like and doesn't like. People will interpret things the way they want to and use Bible quotes to manipulate their own political ideas. Sacred texts are all interpreted differently by different people, I don't think anyone has the right to judge someone else on what they believe in and I certainly think it's about time to stop engaging in wars because we disagree with the beliefs of another group. Obviously this isn't going to stop them though, I just wish people would be more logical about things when other people's lives are on the line.
