As I read Diesel's trail jounal, I realized how in-touch he was with nature. He stated that it had been raining for a while and he wanted to let it stop before he kept hiking. I then came to the conclusion that these hikers see the Appalachain Trail as sacred ground. Although there is no religious focus on the trail, they have connected so deeply with it that it becomes a sacred experience. It was amazing to read how much he loved hiking and everything he had gone through on the trail already. You could tell that he was truly emotionally invested in the trail.
