Tucker Frye- Phases of Rites of Passage 4/25

Phases of Rites of Passage
Tucker Frye

All rites of passage or transition are marked with three phases: separation, limen, and aggregation. Separation is the first stage in which a person leaves their social norms. They take the first steps away from the life they knew and leave it all behind. Limen is the second stage, it involves the idea of liminality. Liminality is again the idea of being in between or betwixt stages. When a person is on a hiking trail alone in the woods, they are between worlds. The third stage is called aggregation. It involves returning to a person's former life. When a person comes home after hiking the Appalachian trail, they are different and it is sometimes a challenge to work them back into a daily routine.
