Wesley Carey: Mount Rushmore

After my senior year of high school, my brother, our friend, and I decided to go on a cross-country road trip. Our plans were pretty hectic, as we would travel in a general direction and decide as we neared different places and cities if we wanted to visit them. One of the places we decided to travel to was Mount Rushmore. We experienced much difficulty in trying to reach it, as our GPS had been leading us to the wrong place and we also made a detour to try to find a bathroom that took us far out of the way. When we finally got there, it was almost the middle of the night. We caught a glimpse of the mountain as we drove into a parking garage. After parking, we walked up a flight of stairs and looked towards where we had seen the mountain just moments earlier, but no there wasn't anything visible. The lights that shone on the mountain had been shut off, and it was now too dark to actually see the mountain. At first, it was extremely disappointing, but we eventually realized the humor of our situation.

I think this sort of experience helped me to realize that, while we can't control every detail of everything that happens to us, we can at least try to appreciate it as much as possible.
