In Ronald Fishers book The
Appalachian Trail; he shares an experience on the AT. He meets a family
that invites him and other hikers to take part in their annual chanting of the
kirtan. The family says, “When we chant the kirtan, we merge into one spirit.”
This seems to follow the idea of communitas. When they perform the chant, they
invite strangers of all sorts to join them. However even all of these strangers
are able to “merge into one spirit.” Here everyone comes together as one unit,
with no one being above or holding more power than anyone else. The passage
seemed to closely follow the communitas we often discuss in class.
