Zachary Kuhn: Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture #1

Victor Turner and Edith Turner state that "...pilgrimage as an institutional form [did] not attain real prominence until the emergence of the major historical religions..." (Turner & Turner, pg. 1). This is interesting in that my term paper involves this topic, and offers an interesting view on the subject of pilgrimage. Pilgrimage didn't gain much validity until major historical religions came into play, and this is why many people associate pilgrimage and religion. Even though they are closely correlated they do not always have to be connected. Much like sacred space is not always connected with religion, pilgrimage is not always religious in nature. Non religious people can experience sacred space and pilgrimage just the same as those who are religious.
