Lane’s first axiom is that “sacred place is not chosen, it chooses”. People do not just walk around and randomly decide that a certain site is sacred. Instead of people mandating where a sacred place is located, the place chooses for itself. In the beginning of the year, we looked at the temple of Poseidon located at Cape Sounion, Greece. Poseidon’s temple over looks the sea and since Poseidon was the God of the Sea, it is fitting. It is no coincidence that the temple overlooks the water, but the place chose to be sacred because of the relation between Poseidon and water. I wrote the first assignment we had on the Jordan River. This place chose to be sacred because there is a spot where John the Baptist baptized the Son of God. John the Baptist could have baptized the Son of God anywhere in that river, but he chose that exact spot because the river spoke for itself.
