Emily Jackson Dunlop- Outside Reading #2

The article O. K. WerckMeister called Cluny III and the Pilgrimage to Santiago discusses the beautiful Cathedral of Santiago in comparisons to others of its time. He talks about the plans of St. Sernin at Toulouse, St. Martin at Tours, St. Foy at Conques, and St. Martial at Limoges along with Santiago. All of these churches shared a cross shaped layout with a longer nave than transept. The apse is the focal point of all these cathedrals. All of these churches also happened to be pilgrimage churches. Santiago is one of the best known pilgrimages in the world and is known for the beauty of its cathedral. The article also describes a Clunaic takeover attempt on the pilgrimage roads between the years of 1082 and 1096. Abbot Hugh was ultimately trying to increase the international scope of money contributions by extending the Abbey Church at Cluny's connection with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Pope Urban's decision at the council of Nimes in 1096 brought independence to the sanctuaries on this road and put an end to Abbot Hugh's plan.
