In Ronald Fishers book The
Appalachian Trail an old man, Gurd Cave, talks about leaving his home in
the mountains of the AT when a national park was established. He used to love
to share stories and preach with visiting friends and family about the
mountain. Still, to this day he remains preaching about the mountains. This
shows just how much of an affect the mountains and AT can have on a persons
life. Gurd and his wife had to leave everything they knew but accepted it
because of their love for the mountain. This is an example of how much nature,
specifically areas of the AT mean to people. Even after being forced to leave
his home he still loves that place and wouldn’t change anything because of the
memories he made there.
