Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture #2 - Matt Marquand
In Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture by Victor Turner and Edith Turner classifies pilgrimage into four main types. The first two occur in all historical religions, pilgrimages based on documentary or widespread traditional evidence and pilgrimages based on older religions and symbols. The last two are within the Christian tradition, medieval pilgrimages and pilgrimages that occured post-Tridentine period of European Catholicism. These types helped explain why people go on pilgrimages and the impact a pilgrimage can have on somebody. Breaking pilgrimages down assists in my understanding the purpose pilgrimages are supposed to have.
