Jackie Bond- Image and Pilgrimage 3

Another term that we came across in class from the Image and Pilgrimage book was the concept of communitas versus community. Community is a group of people that have a set structure such as class or ranking, where people work together but are more focused on their own goals. However communitas is when a group of people experience liminality together and they share a common experience. They take community to the next level by eliminating all of the differences between them and they place everyone on the same, equal level. In communitas, they share a sacred experience and so they all have something in common. They also stop caring so much about their own goals and benefits and start caring about the group as a whole and what is best for them all together.
