Keely Johnson: Smith Mountain Lake
For spring break this year, instead of going to Panama City to drink like most of my classmates, I went up to Smith Mountain lake. Since it was still cold we were the only people renting out a lake house. We had the entire lake to ourselves for a week. One day we took the boat out to the middle of the lake, turned the engine off, and just sat there and admired the sun setting down behind Smith Mountain. The silence was not awkward, and the time seemed to stand still as we sat in awe of the beauty of this place. There was a tremendum to the experience and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment for the day. Smith Mountain Lake let me experience the sacrality of its location for that brief and shining moment. I hope to be able to experience it again in the future.
