Mary Lauren Smith - Landscapes of the Sacred - First Axiom

The first axiom in Lane's book is "sacred place is not chosen, it chooses". What this means is that one can not say that any piece of land is sacred just because they feel like doing so; some type of sacred ritual or event must have had happened to it before previously. For example, if someone had to of lost a loved one in a car accident on the side of the road, that place from now on would be sacred to them, because that's the last place their loved one was living, and it's where they can go and feel at peace knowing they are in a better place. One does not have intentions of making this place sacred, it just happens.
