The idea of flow is a complicated one. Flow is defined as a state of mind where we react with just our internal logic, with no need to use conscious intervention. Flow is similar to the experience of being 'in the zone' when playing a sport, performing a familiar task, etc. While playing a sport, we are not aware of every action we do; we just do it because we are experiencing flow. However, if we become aware that we ARE aware, then we lose our evident focus, and the flow is interrupted.
Stepping onto the field before every lacrosse game puts me in a different mindset. I am in my own universe, and the weight of school and life is lifted, and I am at a familiar center. If I become distracted by something other than the task at hand, I lose any sort of focus to the game, and my universe comes crashing down along with my ability to function completely toward the task.
