Wesley Carey: Outside Reading #1

I read a blog written by a person 5 months after completing his hike of the Appalachian Trail. He talks about his elation as he ascended Mt. Katahdin, and how amazed he was at having completed his journey. He then begins to talk about his life after hiking the AT. He moved across the country and now has a job. He also doesn't know many people outside of work. He contrasts the clear-cut goals and the every-moment-matters attitude of the AT to his more relaxed lifestyle now. He says that while he often misses the AT and the his friends that he met while hiking it, that he is extremely happy and looks back on his experience very fondly.

It was interesting to get the perspective of somebody who had hiked the trail just a few months earlier and to see where their life had gone afterwards. He and all of his friends who had been together so recently are now scattered across the country each doing different things. Its interesting to think about the different effects that hiking the AT had on all of them, and I wonder if the nostalgia that the writer experienced was also experienced by all of his friends.
